Part of this behavior may be a habit that became reinforced by any attention she may receive for the action. However, cats scratch objects to scent- and visually-mark territory. So it’s also very likely she’s simply making a statement that the bowl and surrounding areas “belongs” to her. I suspect she wouldn’t bother if she didn’t enjoy the food, and when she’s really liking the meal, stops in the middle.
